Microsoft has no intention of leaving the console market, according to a report by journalist Shannon Liao. She claims that Xbox head Phil Spencer reassured employees during an internal meeting on Tuesday that the company will continue to produce Xbox hardware as part of a strategy that involves multiple kinds of devices. This comes amid rumors that Microsoft is planning to release some of its first-party games on rival platforms, such as PS5 and Nintendo Switch, after launching them first on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Spencer also announced that he will host a business update event this week, where he will share more details about the future of Xbox with the public.
Microsoft has been expanding its presence in the gaming industry with acquisitions of major studios like Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax Media, as well as investing in cloud gaming and subscription services like Game Pass. However, some fans have expressed concern that Microsoft might abandon its console business or lose its identity as a platform holder. Liao's report suggests that Microsoft is still committed to making consoles, at least for the foreseeable future, and that it has a vision for how Xbox can coexist with other devices and platforms.
